## Are you ready to go beyond Search?

Starter: almost certainly not yet. At $5,000/month or less, a second campaign type splits a budget that’s already small.

The exception is a small YouTube remarketing test (around 10% of budget) once Search has been stable for two months and your remarketing lists have at least a few thousand users.

Intermediate: consider YouTube remarketing once Search is stable and not losing much impression share to budget on your best campaigns.

Test Performance Max only if you have 30+ conversions a month and offline conversions (SQLs or pipeline) flowing back into Google Ads. Budget each test at 10 to 20% of spend, for at least six weeks.

Advanced: both are worth testing with proper controls. Run PMax as an experiment against your existing setup, bidding on offline conversion values.

Run YouTube awareness in one region with a geographic holdout so you can measure lift. Budget tests for at least one sales cycle.

## Performance Max

You give PMax a goal, a budget, creative assets (headlines, descriptions, images, videos, logos) and optional audience signals. Google decides where to show ads and what to bid.

You see less detail and have fewer controls than in Search, although 2025 added a lot back.

When PMax can work for B2B

30+ conversions a month account-wide, and offline conversions telling Google which leads became SQLs or pipeline, ideally with values.

Your Search campaigns are already capturing core demand and you want more reach.

You have decent creative: real product images, a short video, clear headlines.

A region where you have strong data and want to test incremental volume.

When to avoid it

Your only conversion is a form fill or trial sign-up with no quality signal. PMax will find the cheapest form fills, often from Display and apps.

Low conversion volume or a small budget.

You need tight control over which searches you appear on (competitor or regulated terms).

You can’t yet tell good leads from bad in the CRM.

### Controls to use if you run it

As of October 2026

Negative keywords at campaign level, and shared negative lists. Apply your B2B negative list from the templates.

Search terms report for PMax. Review it weekly like Search.

Channel performance report (in the campaign’s Insights and reports): see how much went to Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps, and what each converted. If Display is taking a big share with poor lead quality, that’s your answer.

Brand exclusions, so PMax doesn’t take credit for your own brand searches that your brand campaign (or organic) would win anyway.

Placement reporting and account-level placement exclusions for apps and sites you don’t want.

Location option and exclusions: set Presence and add the same do-not-sell list as Search. See Geo targeting.

An option to opt PMax out of Search Partners and the Display Network separately has been reported in alpha testing since mid-July 2026, and was still labelled alpha in October 2026. If it appears in your account, consider turning Display off for lead gen. Don’t assume you have it.

Final URL expansion: turn it off or add URL exclusions so Google doesn’t send traffic to careers, blog or support pages.

Google's rule for overlap: an exact match keyword in a Search campaign that is identical to the search wins over PMax.

A PMax search theme identical to the search ties with phrase and broad keywords, and the tie goes to the higher Ad Rank. If your Search campaign is limited by budget, PMax can still serve on your exact match terms.

So PMax can take queries from your Search campaigns; watch whether Search volume drops when PMax launches. As of October 2026

## YouTube ads

Video does two jobs for B2B software: remarketing (reminding people who visited the site or are in your CRM) and awareness (introducing the problem and your name to your buyer profile before they search).

Start with remarketing; it’s cheaper, easier to measure and teaches you what video works.

### Which campaign type

Demand Gen for remarketing and conversion-focused video. Google upgraded Video action campaigns into Demand Gen during 2025, so this is where conversion-optimised YouTube ads live now. Demand Gen also runs on Discover, Gmail and Display unless you restrict channels; for a first test, consider limiting it to YouTube so you know what you’re measuring. As of October 2026

Video campaigns with a reach or views goal for awareness. You pay per thousand impressions or per view; judge them on reach in the right audience and later lift, not on conversions.

### Audiences

Your data: website visitors (from the Google tag, last 30 to 90 days), visitors of pricing or demo pages, and Customer Match lists from your CRM (open opportunities, trial users who didn’t convert). Any policy-compliant account can use Customer Match lists for observation and exclusions (for example, excluding current customers). To target them, Google requires 90 days of account history and more than USD 50,000 lifetime spend, so many Starter accounts can only exclude. Lists need at least 100 recently active members, which small B2B lists often miss, so combine segments.

Exclude current customers (unless you’re upselling) and people who already converted in the last 30 days.

For awareness: custom segments built from the search terms that convert in your Search campaigns, and in-market or industry audiences. Expect B2B targeting on YouTube to be loose; tight creative (“For finance teams closing month-end in spreadsheets…”) does the filtering.

### Creative you can produce in a week

You don’t need a production company. A screen recording of the product with a clear voiceover, or a customer or founder talking to camera for 30 seconds, works well in B2B. Rules that matter:

Say the problem in the first five seconds. Viewers can skip after five.

Show the product doing the thing, not abstract graphics.

Make one offer, matching your goal: start a free trialbook a demo.

Produce 15-second and 30-second versions, in horizontal and vertical (Shorts) formats. Add captions; many watch muted.

Upload to your company YouTube channel (unlisted is fine) and link it in Google Ads.

### Measuring YouTube honestly

View-through conversions count people who saw an ad (didn’t click) and converted later. In remarketing, many of them were going to convert anyway. Report them separately and give them little weight.

Watch branded search volume and direct traffic in the targeted region before and during the campaign. A region-based holdout (run in one comparable region, not another) is the cleanest test you can do without special tools.

At larger budgets, Google offers Brand Lift and Conversion Lift studies for eligible campaigns; ask your Google rep about thresholds.

Compare CRM pipeline from the region and from remarketed accounts, not platform-reported conversions.

EU/UK: remarketing and consent

Remarketing lists only include visitors who consented to ad cookies, and Consent Mode v2 must pass
ad_personalization
as granted for them to be used for personalised ads. Expect much smaller lists than in other regions.

Customer Match also requires a lawful basis for using those emails for advertising.

Video inventory is often cheap per view in your region, which makes awareness tempting.

Keep the same discipline:

Test in the countries where Search already produces qualified pipeline.

Use local-language or subtitled creative.

Judge on pipeline.

Check your region’s privacy rules for remarketing and Customer Match in the Tracking lesson.

US/Canada: remarketing and opt-outs

<details className="gads-deeper">

Go deeper Why PMax often disappoints in B2B lead generation

PMax is built to find more conversions at your target cost across all of Google’s inventory. Inventory differs a lot in price: a click on a high-intent search costs many times a Display or app impression.

If a form fill from a mobile game counts the same as a demo request from a search for your category, the system will rationally buy the cheap ones.

In ecommerce, a purchase is a purchase; in B2B, a form fill isn’t a customer.

The fix is a better signal: import SQLs or pipeline as offline conversions (with values), make them the primary goal, and keep raw form fills as secondary.

Then PMax has a reason to prefer the expensive, high-intent traffic. Until that’s in place, Search gives you more control for the same money.
