> Use Slide Master view to change every slide at once: backgrounds, fonts, logos, custom layouts, headers and footers, slide numbers, and templates.

Want your company logo on every slide, every title in the same blue, and a footer at the bottom of each page, without touching 40 slides one by one? That's what the Slide Master is for. The Slide Master helps you control the overall appearance of a presentation from one central location. Instead of editing each slide individually, you can make changes once and apply them across the entire presentation. In this lesson, you'll learn how to work with the Slide Master, customize layouts, add logos and footers, manage slide numbers and dates, and save your design as a reusable template.

Open the **PowerPoint sandbox** and follow along.

## Understanding the Slide Master

Imagine creating a presentation with dozens of slides and then being asked to change the title color, update the footer, and add a company logo to every slide. Making those changes one slide at a time would take a lot of work.

The **Slide Master** allows you to make these updates in one place.

PowerPoint uses a three-level design structure:

| Level | Controls | Example |
|---------|---------|---------|
| **Slide Master** | Common design elements for all slides | Change all slide titles to dark blue |
| **Layouts** | Specific slide types | Give title slides a unique background |
| **Individual Slides** | A single slide | Replace a picture on one slide |

Changes normally flow from: Slide Master → Layout → Slide

A manual change made directly on a slide may override the master settings.

## Open Slide Master View

To open Slide Master view:

1. Click **View** > **Slide Master**.

You'll see:

- A large master thumbnail at the top.
- Layout thumbnails beneath the master.
- Layout management tools.
- Slide Master editing commands.

The **large top thumbnail** represents the Slide Master.

The smaller thumbnails underneath represent the layouts.

When finished:

1. Click **Close Master View**.

Use the Slide Master for items that should appear on every slide. Use layouts when only certain slide types need different formatting.

## Change the Background

To change the presentation background:

1. Open **Slide Master** view.
2. Select the Slide Master.
3. Choose a background color.

In Microsoft PowerPoint, you can also use: Slide Master > Background Styles or Format Background

Background options may include:

- Solid colors
- Gradients
- Pictures
- Textures

For most presentations, a light background with dark text provides the best readability.

## Change the Title Style

The Slide Master controls title formatting for the presentation.

To modify title formatting:

1. Select the Slide Master.
2. Click the title placeholder.
3. Apply formatting such as:
   - Font
   - Font size
   - Font color
   - Bold
   - Italic

Example: Dark blue, bold titles

Every slide title that follows the master style updates automatically.

The text displayed in master placeholders is sample text. Modify the formatting, not the placeholder wording itself.

## Working with Layouts

Layouts control the appearance of specific slide types.

Common layouts include:

- Title Slide
- Title and Content
- Two Content
- Comparison
- Blank

You can customize each layout independently.

For example:

- Different title formatting
- Different background colors
- Additional placeholders

## Create a Custom Layout

To create a custom layout:

1. Open **Slide Master** view.
2. Click **Insert Layout**.
3. Rename the layout.

Example: Race Results

In Microsoft PowerPoint, you can also add placeholders such as:

- Text
- Picture
- Table
- Chart
- SmartArt

Once created, the layout appears in: Home > Layout and New Slide menus.

## Add a Logo to Every Slide

A common use of the Slide Master is adding logos.

To add a logo:

1. Select the Slide Master.
2. Click **Insert** > **Pictures**.
3. Insert the logo.
4. Position it where desired.

Because the logo is placed on the master, it appears on every slide automatically.

Benefits include:

- Consistent branding
- Reduced editing effort
- Prevention of accidental movement

### Hide Background Graphics

Some slides may not need the logo.

For example:

- Title slides
- Cover slides

Use **Hide Background Graphics** on a layout to hide master graphics for slides that use that layout.

## Headers and Footers

Headers and footers provide information that appears repeatedly throughout a presentation.

To add them:

1. Click **Insert** > **Header & Footer**.

Available options include:

### Date and Time

Choose:

- Fixed date
- Automatically updating date

### Slide Number

Automatically numbers slides.

Numbers update automatically when slides are added, deleted, or moved.

### Footer

Displays custom text.

Example: Riverside Running Club

### Don't Show on Title Slide

Keeps opening slides free of footers and slide numbers.

Use Header & Footer instead of manually adding text boxes to each slide. It saves time and keeps formatting consistent.

## Reset Slides to the Master

Sometimes a slide does not respond to master changes.

This usually happens because formatting was applied directly to the slide.

To restore master formatting:

1. Select the slide.
2. Click **Home** > **Reset**.

Reset restores:

- Placeholder positions
- Layout formatting
- Master formatting

The slide content remains unchanged.

## Save as a Template

Templates allow you to reuse presentation designs.

To save a template:

1. Click **File** > **Save As**.
2. Select: PowerPoint Template (*.potx)

Templates can contain:

- Themes
- Slide Masters
- Layouts
- Custom formatting
- Brand elements

Organizations often use templates to ensure all presentations follow the same design standards.

Creating a strong Slide Master before building slides can save significant time later by eliminating repetitive formatting work.

## Common mistakes

| Mistake | What happens | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Editing a layout instead of the master | Only some slides change | Select the large master thumbnail |
| Logo pasted on slides | It moves, and copies pile up | Delete them, and add it once on the master |
| Slide titles don't follow the master | They were formatted by hand | Select the slides and click **Home** > **Reset** |
| Forgetting to close Master view | You think you're editing slides | Click **Close Master View** |
| Footer typed in a text box | It's missing on new slides | Use **Insert** > **Header & Footer** |

## Exercise

Click **Load the practice presentation** below: four slides for the Riverside Running Club. You'll brand all of them from the master. Do each task and press **Check**.
