> Add entrance, emphasis, exit, and motion path animations; set start, duration, and delay; reorder them; and use Animation Painter and triggers. Then animate a product launch in the Chapter 5 project.

Transitions control how slides change, while animations control how objects move within a slide. Animations can help reveal information step by step, highlight important points, and guide audience attention. In this lesson, you'll learn how to add animations, control their timing, change their order, use Animation Painter, and create interactive trigger-based effects.

Open the **PowerPoint sandbox** and follow along. Most animation tools are located on the **Animations** tab.

## Types of Animations

PowerPoint provides four main categories of animations.

| Animation Type | Purpose | Examples |
|------------|------------|------------|
| Entrance | Makes an object appear | Appear, Fade In, Fly In, Zoom In, Wipe In |
| Emphasis | Draws attention to an existing object | Pulse, Spin, Grow/Shrink, Teeter |
| Exit | Makes an object disappear | Fade Out, Fly Out, Zoom Out, Disappear |
| Motion Path | Moves an object along a path | Line, Arc, Circle, Zigzag |

Choose the animation type based on the effect you want to create.

## Add an Animation

To animate an object:

1. Select the object.
2. Open the **Animations** tab.
3. Choose an animation effect.

The animation previews automatically when applied.

Objects can include:

- Text boxes
- Pictures
- Shapes
- SmartArt graphics
- Charts

In Microsoft PowerPoint, an animation number appears beside the object, indicating its order in the animation sequence.

In the sandbox, animation settings appear in the inspector when the animated object is selected.

## Effect Options

Many animations include additional settings that control how the effect plays.

For example, **Fly In** may enter:

- From Left
- From Right
- From Top
- From Bottom

Text animations also provide sequence options.

Common sequence settings include:

- As One Object
- All At Once
- By Paragraph

### By Paragraph

When applied to a bulleted list, each bullet appears separately.

Example:

Click 1:

• Planning

Click 2:

• Planning

• Development

Click 3:

• Planning

• Development

• Testing

Use **By Paragraph** when presenting bullet lists. This keeps the audience focused on the point you're discussing instead of reading ahead.

## Animation Timing

Animation timing controls when and how animations play.

### Start Options

| Option | Effect |
|----------|----------|
| On Click | Starts when you click |
| With Previous | Starts at the same time as the previous animation |
| After Previous | Starts automatically after the previous animation completes |

### Duration

Duration controls how long an animation takes.

Examples:

0.5 seconds

1 second

2 seconds

Short durations generally feel smoother and more professional.

### Delay

Delay determines how long PowerPoint waits before starting the animation.

Example: Delay: 0.5 seconds

The animation waits half a second before beginning.

## Animation Pane

The Animation Pane displays every animation on a slide.

To open it:

1. Click **Animations**.
2. Select **Animation Pane**.

The pane allows you to:

- View all animations
- Change the order
- Edit timing settings
- Remove animations

Animations play in the order shown in the pane.

You can:

- Drag animations up or down
- Use **Move Earlier**
- Use **Move Later**

## Animation Painter

Animation Painter copies an animation from one object to another.

To use Animation Painter:

1. Select an animated object.
2. Click **Animation Painter**.
3. Click the destination object.

Animation Painter copies:

- Animation type
- Timing
- Effect settings

It does not copy the object's text or formatting.

Double-click **Animation Painter** to apply the animation to multiple objects.

## Triggers

A trigger starts an animation when a specific object is clicked.

Example:

- Click a question.
- The answer appears.

To create a trigger in Microsoft PowerPoint:

1. Select the animated object.
2. Click **Animations** > **Trigger**.
3. Choose **On Click Of**.
4. Select the object that should activate the animation.

Triggers are useful for:

- Interactive quizzes
- Training presentations
- Click-to-reveal information

Use animations to direct attention. Every animation should have a purpose. If an effect doesn't help the audience understand the content, it usually isn't needed.

## Common mistakes

| Mistake | What happens | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Too many animations | The slide becomes a circus | Animate only what you're about to talk about |
| Wrong order | Points appear before you mention them | Reorder in the Animation Pane |
| Everything On Click | You click twenty times per slide | Use **With Previous** or **After Previous** |
| Exit effects with no reason | Content disappears unexpectedly | Remove exits you don't need |
| Long delays | The audience waits in silence | Keep delays short, or remove them |

## Exercise

Click **Load the practice presentation** below. Then do each task and press **Check**.

## Chapter project

Put Chapter 5 together. You'll turn the Aurora lamp deck into a polished launch show.

## What to Remember

- **Entrance** animations make objects appear on a slide.
- **Emphasis** animations draw attention to objects that are already visible.
- **Exit** animations remove objects from a slide.
- **Motion Path** animations move objects along a defined path.
- Select an object, then choose an animation from the **Animations** tab.
- Use **Effect Options** to change the direction or behavior of an animation.
- **On Click**, **With Previous**, and **After Previous** control when animations start.
- **Duration** controls how long an animation takes; **Delay** controls how long it waits before starting.
- Use **By Paragraph** to reveal bullet points one at a time.
- The **Animation Pane** lets you view, manage, and reorder animations.
- **Animation Painter** copies animation settings from one object to another.
- **Triggers** start animations when a specific object is clicked.
- Keep animations simple, consistent, and focused on guiding audience attention.

That's the end of **Chapter 5**. In **Chapter 6**, you'll learn how to add speaker notes, deliver a presentation, rehearse timings, and review your slides before sharing them.
