> Apply slide transitions, change effect options, duration, and sound, apply one transition to every slide, advance slides automatically, and meet Morph.

A transition is the visual effect that plays when one slide changes to the next. Used carefully, transitions make a presentation feel smooth and professional. Used too often, they can distract the audience from your message. In this lesson, you'll learn how to apply transitions, adjust their settings, control slide timing, and use Morph to create smooth slide-to-slide movement.

Open the **PowerPoint sandbox** and follow along. Most transition commands are located on the **Transitions** tab.

## Apply a Transition

To add a transition:

1. Select a slide in the Slides pane.
2. Open the **Transitions** tab.
3. Choose a transition such as **Fade** or **Push**.

The transition plays when PowerPoint moves **to** that slide.

Examples of common transitions:

- Fade
- Push
- Wipe
- Split
- Reveal

To remove a transition:

1. Select the slide.
2. Choose **None**.

In Microsoft PowerPoint, a star icon appears beside slides that have a transition applied.

## Effect Options

Many transitions include additional settings that change how the effect behaves.

Examples:

### Push

Options include:

- From Left
- From Right
- From Top
- From Bottom

### Wipe

Options include:

- From Left
- From Right
- From Top
- From Bottom

These options allow the same transition to create different visual movements.

## Transition Timing

The **Timing** group controls how transitions play.

| Setting | Purpose |
|----------|----------|
| Duration | Controls how long the transition lasts |
| Sound | Plays a sound during the transition |
| On Mouse Click | Advances when the presenter clicks |
| After | Advances automatically after a specified time |
| Apply To All | Applies the current transition to every slide |

### Duration

Duration determines transition speed.

Recommended setting: 0.5 to 1 second

Short transitions generally feel smoother and keep the presentation moving.

### Sound

Transition sounds can accompany slide changes.

Examples:

- Chime
- Applause
- Drum Roll

For most professional presentations, it is best to use: No Sound

### On Mouse Click

The presentation advances when the presenter clicks.

This is the default behavior for most presentations.

### After

Slides advance automatically after a specified amount of time.

Example: After 5 seconds

This is useful for:

- Kiosk presentations
- Reception displays
- Self-running presentations

### Apply To All

Applies the selected transition and settings to all slides in the presentation.

A single subtle transition such as **Fade** is usually the best choice for an entire presentation. Consistency helps the audience focus on the content instead of the effects.

## Advance Slides Automatically

To make slides advance automatically:

1. Select a slide.
2. Open the **Transitions** tab.
3. Enable **After**.
4. Enter the required time.

Example: 00:05.00

The slide changes after five seconds.

You can keep **On Mouse Click** enabled as well, allowing either method to advance the presentation.

## Morph

**Morph** is a special transition available in Microsoft PowerPoint 2019 and Microsoft 365.

Morph automatically animates changes between two similar slides.

Example workflow:

1. Create a slide.
2. Duplicate the slide.
3. Move, resize, or recolor objects on the duplicate.
4. Apply **Morph** to the second slide.

PowerPoint creates a smooth animation between the two versions.

Common uses:

- Moving images
- Zooming into content
- Showing processes
- Revealing detailed information

Morph is not available in the PowerPoint sandbox. You can practice with other transition effects instead.

## Preview Transitions

Always preview transitions before presenting.

To preview:

1. Click **Preview** on the Transitions tab.

Or:

1. Open **Slide Show**.
2. Select **From Beginning**.

This allows you to see the presentation exactly as the audience will.

In Microsoft PowerPoint, you can select multiple slides using **Ctrl + Click** and apply the same transition to all selected slides at once.

## Choosing the Right Transition

Different transitions create different impressions.

| Transition | Feel | Best Use |
|------------|------------|------------|
| Fade | Smooth and professional | Most presentations |
| Push | Movement from one step to another | Processes and timelines |
| Wipe | Sequential progression | Procedures and workflows |
| Morph | Seamless object movement | Visual storytelling |
| Zoom | Dramatic emphasis | Special reveals |
| Vortex | Strong visual effect | Occasional special moments |

General guidelines:

- Use one transition throughout most of the deck.
- Reserve stronger transitions for important moments.
- Keep durations short.
- Avoid excessive visual effects.

Remember that a transition belongs to the slide being entered. To change how Slide 4 appears, select Slide 4 and apply the transition there.

## Common mistakes

| Mistake | What happens | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Random transitions | The deck looks unprofessional | Choose one and click **Apply To All** |
| Transition on the wrong slide | The effect plays at an odd moment | A transition plays when moving **to** a slide |
| Long durations | The show feels slow | Set Duration to 1 second or less |
| **After** set by accident | Slides change before you finish talking | Untick **After** |
| Sounds on every slide | The audience gets annoyed | Set Sound to **[No Sound]** |

## What to Remember

- A **transition** plays when a slide appears.
- Apply transitions from the **Transitions** tab.
- **Effect Options** customize how a transition behaves.
- **Duration** controls the speed of the transition.
- **Apply To All** uses the same transition throughout the presentation.
- **On Mouse Click** advances slides manually.
- **After** advances slides automatically after a set time.
- **Morph** creates smooth movement between similar slides in Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Preview transitions before presenting.
- One subtle transition is usually more effective than many different effects.

In the next lesson, you'll learn how to animate text, pictures, shapes, and other objects within a slide.
