Course contents
Getting Started
- Introduction to Word — What Word is, what it can do, where it is used, and why it is worth learning. Then create, format, and save your first document in the Word sandbox.
- Understanding the Interface — A tour of the Word screen: the ribbon and its tabs, the document area, the status bar, zoom, and the Print Layout and Web Layout views.
- Managing Documents — Create, open, and save Word documents, know when to use Save As, and pick the right file format for editing and for sharing.
Working with Text
- Text Editing — Type, select, cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, and find and replace: the editing skills you use every day in Word.
- Text Formatting — Change fonts, sizes, and colors, and use bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, highlight, superscript, subscript, and clear formatting.
- Paragraph Formatting — Align paragraphs, set line and paragraph spacing, indent text, and use paragraph marks to see what's really on the page.
- Lists — Create bulleted, numbered, and multilevel lists, and change their bullets and numbering styles.
Page Layout
- Page Setup — Set margins, switch between portrait and landscape, choose a paper size, and make custom page settings.
- Breaks and Columns — Start new pages with page breaks, give parts of a document their own layout with section breaks, and split text into columns.
Tables and Pictures
- Working with Tables — Create tables, add and remove rows and columns, and make tables readable with styles, borders, and shading.
- Working with Pictures — Insert, resize, crop, and position pictures, then build a one-page fact sheet in the Chapter 4 project.
Document Design
- Page Elements — Add headers and footers, insert page numbers, give the first page its own look, and change the page number format.
- Document Links — Insert, edit, and remove hyperlinks, and use bookmarks to mark places in a document and link to them.
- Styles — Use heading and normal styles, modify them, create your own, then build a full report in the Chapter 5 project.
Reviewing Documents
- View Options — Switch between Print Layout, Web Layout, and Read Mode, zoom in and out, and use the ruler to see margins and indents.
- Navigation Pane — Use the Navigation Pane to see your headings, search the document, and jump between sections.
- Comments — Add, edit, reply to, resolve, and delete comments, and move between them.
- Track Changes — Record every edit with Track Changes, review it, and accept or reject it, then review a newsletter in the Chapter 6 project.
References
- Footnotes and Endnotes — Add footnotes and endnotes, learn how they differ, and choose the right one for your document.
- Table of Contents — Build a table of contents from your headings, update it, and remove it, then build a report with a contents page in the Chapter 7 project.
Document Output
- Printing Documents — Check pages in print preview, choose print settings and page ranges, and pick the right printer, or save as PDF.
- Document Formats — Save and export documents as DOCX, PDF, TXT, HTML, RTF, ODT, and templates, then prepare a flyer in the Chapter 8 project.
Advanced Features
- Forms — Build forms with text fields, check boxes, drop-down lists, and content controls, and set their properties.
- XML Mapping and Protection — Link content controls to XML data, restrict editing, make documents read-only, and protect forms, then build a registration form in the Chapter 9 project.
Practical Projects
- Real-World Projects — Put every skill together: build a business letter, a personal letter, a resume, and a full report with headings, a table, a picture, and a final export.
