Slide Layouts and Slide Management
By the Syncfusion DevTutorials team · Last updated
Choose and change slide layouts, fill in placeholders, and add, duplicate, move, hide, reuse, and group slides into sections. Then fix up an About Me deck in the Chapter 1 project.
Every slide is based on a layout. A layout provides a predefined arrangement of placeholders for titles, text, pictures, charts, and other content. Choosing the right layout helps you create organized and professional-looking slides quickly. In this lesson, you'll learn how to work with layouts and placeholders, add and manage slides, organize presentations with sections, and reuse content from existing presentations.
Open the PowerPoint sandbox and follow along. Most slide management commands are available in the Slides group on the Home tab.
Slide Layouts
A layout determines the structure of a slide, including the placeholders available and where they appear.
| Layout | Contents | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| Title Slide | Title and subtitle placeholders | Opening slide of a presentation |
| Title and Content | Title and content placeholder | Most presentation slides |
| Section Header | Section title and subtitle | Starting a new topic or section |
| Two Content | Title and two content placeholders | Side-by-side content |
| Comparison | Two content areas with headings | Comparing information |
| Title Only | Title placeholder only | Custom slide designs |
| Blank | No placeholders | Full-slide images or custom layouts |
| Content with Caption | Content area and descriptive text | Explanations with visuals |
| Picture with Caption | Picture area and caption | Image-focused slides |
Placeholders
Placeholders are the boxes that display text such as: Click to add title or Click to add text
Placeholders help maintain consistency throughout the presentation.
You can:
- Click inside a placeholder and type content.
- Add text, lists, tables, charts, or images depending on the placeholder type.
- Leave placeholders empty if they are not needed.
Empty placeholders do not appear during a slide show.
Use placeholders whenever possible instead of drawing your own text boxes. Placeholder content follows the presentation theme and works properly with Outline View and accessibility tools.
Add a Slide
To add a slide with a specific layout:
- Select the slide that should come before the new slide.
- Click the arrow below New Slide on the Home tab.
- Select a layout.
The new slide is inserted immediately after the selected slide.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + M
In the sandbox, use the arrow beneath New Slide when adding slides so you can select the required layout.
Change a Layout
If you choose the wrong layout, you can change it later.
To change a slide layout:
- Select the slide.
- Click Home > Layout.
- Choose a different layout.
PowerPoint automatically attempts to move existing content into appropriate placeholders.
If placeholders have been moved or resized and you want to restore the original arrangement:
- Click Home > Reset.
Duplicate Slides
Duplicating a slide creates an exact copy of it.
To duplicate a slide:
- Right-click the slide thumbnail.
- Select Duplicate Slide.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + D
Duplicating slides is useful when creating multiple slides with similar formatting.
Delete Slides
To remove a slide:
- Select the slide.
- Press Delete.
Or:
- Right-click the slide thumbnail.
- Select Delete Slide.
Deleting a slide permanently removes it from the presentation unless you immediately undo the action.
Move Slides
Slides can be rearranged at any time.
Using the Slides Pane
- Click a slide thumbnail.
- Drag it to a new location.
Using Slide Sorter View
- Open View > Slide Sorter.
- Drag slides into the required order.
Slide Sorter is especially useful for presentations containing many slides.
Hide Slides
A hidden slide remains in the presentation but does not appear during the slide show.
To hide a slide:
- Right-click the slide thumbnail.
- Select Hide Slide.
Hidden slides are displayed with a crossed-out slide number.
To make the slide visible again:
- Right-click the slide.
- Select Hide Slide again.
Use hidden slides for backup information, additional details, or content that may be needed only during questions and discussions.
Copy and Reuse Slides
You can copy slides from one presentation to another.
Copy and Paste
- Select the slide.
- Press: Ctrl + C
- Open another presentation.
- Press: Ctrl + V
Reuse Slides
In PowerPoint:
- Click the arrow under New Slide.
- Select Reuse Slides.
- Browse to another presentation.
- Select the slides you want to insert.
You can choose whether copied slides keep their original formatting or adopt the theme of the current presentation.
The PowerPoint sandbox does not include the Reuse Slides feature. Use copy and paste instead.
Sections
Sections help organize large presentations by grouping related slides.
To create a section:
- Right-click the first slide in the section.
- Select Add Section.
PowerPoint creates: Untitled Section
To rename it:
- Right-click the section heading.
- Select Rename Section.
- Enter a name.
- Press Enter.
Example:
Introduction
Main Content
Summary
Sections can be:
- Renamed
- Moved
- Deleted
- Collapsed
- Expanded
Plan your sections before building a large presentation. Sections make navigation and editing much easier.
Common mistakes

| Forgetting a slide is hidden | It doesn't appear in the show | Look for the crossed-out number, and unhide it |

| Sections left as "Untitled Section" | Nobody knows what's in them | Right-click the heading and Rename it |
